General Access to Acenaphthene-Fused <i>N</i>-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

We communicate a general method for the syntheses of acenaphthene-fused imidazolinium salts that are direct precursors to augmented N-heterocyclic carbenes with fixed cis geometry. Reduction bis(imino)acenaphthene ligands LiAlH4/AlCl3 reagent mix initially produced corresponding 1,2-diamines which, upon ring-closing reaction triethyl orthoformate in acidic solution, gave requisite ionic intermediates. Formation was then shown by preparation selected [Cu(NHC)] complexes were obtained via treatment respective salt base presence Cu(I) source.
